Imagine your dog running freely in your backyard without boundary concerns—this vision became reality through a modular office and an innovative idea about wireless fences. The story of PetSafe Brands paints a picture of technological innovation, strategic acquisitions, and deep understanding of pet care.
In 1991, Randy Boyd founded Radio Fence Corporation in Knoxville, Tennessee, launching its first product—the Radio Fence wireless containment system—that June. With nearly $1 million in first-year sales, the company established itself in the electronic pet fence market. Anticipating product line expansion to include bark collars and remote trainers, the company rebranded as Radio Systems Corporation.
As business grew, Radio Systems Corporation moved to a new headquarters on National Drive. To improve product quality, reduce costs, and enhance reliability, the company established manufacturing partnerships in China—a crucial strategic move. By 2000, Radio Systems reached $24 million in sales, becoming the largest supplier of electronic pet containment systems.
2001 marked Radio Systems' first acquisition—Austin Innovations—adding ultrasonic training products to its portfolio. That same year saw the birth of the PetSafe and Guardian brands, with containment, training, and bark control products transitioning to the PetSafe brand identity.
Subsequent acquisitions of Johnson Pet Doors and U.S. Pet Products expanded the product line as the company relocated to its current PetSafe Way headquarters. International expansion began with the addition of PetSafe Limited for European marketing. The 2006 launch of SportDOG brand addressed hunting and field training needs.
2007 brought two milestones: completion of PetSafe Village opposite headquarters and surpassing $100 million in sales. Strategic additions included Radio Fence Distributors (professional installers) and acquisitions of Fencemaster and Staywell, LTD., expanding into pet doors and chainlink kennels. The company established a China Development Center in Shenzhen and acquired Invisible Fence Technologies, adding professional installation services to its DIY offerings.
The company entered new product categories through acquisitions of Contech, MultiVet International, and Lucky Dog Equipment in 2011. SportDOG launched its Conservation Fund supporting habitat projects, while PetSafe initiated its Bark For Your Park program funding dog parks nationwide.
2013's acquisition spree added six locations and 200 employees, expanding into water fountains, harnesses, collars, leashes, clickers, treats, and pet toilets. SportDOG introduced TEK, combining GPS tracking with remote training technology.
Feline products joined the portfolio in 2014 with ScoopFree automatic litter boxes and FroliCat toys. European operations expanded with a Dundalk, Ireland office. Invisible Fence launched GPS wireless containment while growing its dealer network to 289 locations across seven countries by 2015.
